Digital Innovation at the RSS: Satellite Data Enhances the Accuracy of the 2026 Area Payments Scheme

The Rural Support Service (RSS) brought together stakeholders for an online seminar showcasing how high-resolution satellite data will guide the 2026 area payments season. The event that was organised within the scope of the OASIS project, funded by Interreg Latvia – Lithuania  programme, gained strong interest, with 197 participants attending online, including researchers, farmers, rural consultants, and local government representatives.

The seminar introduced stakeholders to high-resolution satellite imagery and demonstrated how these tools help farmers define field boundaries more accurately. RSS experts showed how modern mapping technologies and data layers reduce errors in aid applications and lower the risk of penalties. The focus of the seminar was the practical value of satellite imagery: high-resolution data enables farmers to track land-use changes, submit more precise applications, and improve farm management. planning. According to experts, such digital tools are becoming essential in modern agricultural management.

The initiative also highlighted its cross-border relevance. Organised within the framework of the OASIS project, the webinar supported farmers in the Latvian–Lithuanian border region by familiarizing them with practical digital tools and providing clear guidance to improve the accuracy of aid applications and ensure more consistent technical support on both sides of the border.

Participants actively discussed the use of satellite data and its practical applications. For those unable to join the live session, the recorded webinar is available on YouTube, where it has already attracted more than 1000 views, indicating strong interest in digital solutions within the agricultural sector.

The seminar demonstrated the growing role of satellite data in ensuring more transparent subsidy administration and strengthening cross-border cooperation in the region.
