Become an Alley Detective this spring
In April and May of 2026, the public engagement campaign “Become an Alley Detective!” is taking place within the “Green Guardians” project, inviting residents to help identify and document tree alleys in Kurzeme and Northern Lithuania.
Spring is an ideal time to notice tree alleys, as emerging foliage highlights their structure and biodiversity. Tree alleys are an important part of the region’s landscape and cultural heritage and play a key role in nature conservation. With public involvement, the project is creating alley database to support better understanding, protection, and management of these natural assets.
Residents are encouraged to report alleys in their surroundings by completing the participatory GIS survey:
The survey allows participants to mark locations, upload photos, and provide additional information.
Identified alleys can be viewed on interactive maps showing reported sites so far:
The campaign continues an initiative launched in autumn last year, during which 228 alleys were reported in Kurzeme and 54 in Northern Lithuania.

The campaign “Become an Alley Detective!” is implemented within project No. LL-00251 “ Preserving Tree Alleys for Biodiversity in Kurzeme and North Lithuania” (Green Guardians), co-funded by the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027. Data collected during the campaign will be used to develop alley database for future protection and management.
