Project LLI-379 – The pilot model of PERFECT organization
providing teaching and social integration
services for children and youth with
special needs

First cycle of parents training in Kaisiadorys Saint Faustina school

Parents are significant contributors to the development of their children. They are the primary caretakers, managers, behavior
models, disciplinarians, and agents of socialization and change for their children. It is accepted that parents can be trained as
effective teachers of their children with disabilities. However, In Latvia ad Lithuania, there are very limited opportunities for
parent education and support services for children with disabilities and their parents. Parents of children with special needs live
with added emotional, medical, social and financial challenges. These extenuating circumstances can often lead to feelings of
loneliness, depression, marital and family problems and health issues. Therefore, Project partners are willing to train parents of
children with disabilities to become co-teachers and co-therapists. This training will focus on identifying types of stressors,
identify coping mechanisms and providing ways to incorporate them into everyday life, and the importance of good
communication. This activity will provide each parent with a positive training experience that will give them the tools necessary
to navigate through systems and advocate for their child with special needs. This training will provide families with a brief
overview of how to find support for your child and family, find information and services, find ways to pay for services, and will
help them start thinking about the future. This training is geared to help parents map out the next steps for their child and
family.

Training for parents  will be guided by the following or similar topics:

1) the team that will support your child with special needs;

2) support and services available for children with special needs and their parents;

3) individual plan and individual education plan for child with special needs;

4) groups that can support parents o f children with special needs;

5) howcan parents help their child who has special needs to integrate into society;

6) how to represent special needs child throughout the school experience;

7) the transition from school to active life;

8) parenting a child with special needs;

9) communicating with child who has special needs;

10) solving parent-child with special needs conflicts.

The idea behind these trainings is to provide parents with useful information that will enable them to better monitor their child with special needs throughout his or her life.
It is planned that there will be organized 2 cycles of parent training in Kaisiadorys Saint Faustina school.
