Artist discussing a plein air painting in Kandava, surrounded by vibrant artworks and lush greenery, showcasing collaboration between Latvian and Lithuanian artists.

Kandava Professional Art Plein Air brought together artists from Latvia and Lithuania!

During the third week of June, Kandava became a vibrant open-air studio as twelve professional artists from Latvia and Lithuania gathered for six inspiring days of painting. Artists worked in various locations around Kandava — capturing the atmosphere of the town’s streets, creating works at the “Vējspārns” Gallery in the Kandava Culture House, and finding inspiration in the beautiful surroundings of Valdeķi.

As part of the plein air, several artists also took on a special task — painting the window and door openings of the Kandava Synagogue, contributing to the revitalisation and visual enhancement of the historic Old Town landscape.

The event concluded with an exhibition of the artworks created during the plein air and an opportunity to meet the participating artists. Held in the square near the synagogue, the final event brought together art, heritage and the local community, offering visitors a chance to see Kandava through the artists’ eyes and discover the creative stories behind their works.

A wonderful celebration of art, cultural heritage and cross-border cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania under the JEWEL project!
