LLI-474 Living by the rivers: development of tourism products based on ancient and modern history in Baltic countries (LivingRivers)

The common challenges for all partners are low utilised natural water resources (rivers) for tourism purposes; lack of innovative and modern way to show glorious historical past of riverside towns; lack of common cultural events.
All partners are located next to the remarkable rivers – Koknese and Jaunjelgava in Latvia are located next to the largest Latvian river Daugava and Kaunas district in Lithuania is situated next to the longest river in Lithuania – Nemunas. Each river itself is important for the nations. The Daugava is called as the river of destiny for Latvian nation linked to rich intangible cultural heritage of Latvian nation – folk songs, fairy tales, legends, riddles etc. Meanwhile, the Nemunas has always been the main axis of Lithuania’s historical and cultural development. Both rivers are known as important ancient trade routes. Nearby these rivers there are ruins of ancient settlements left, lots of cultural and natural heritage sites, recreational areas, regional parks, etc. Koknese and Jaunjelgava as well as Kaunas district have a very high potential for development of water tourism and visiting of riversides towns in the region, however, it is not enough exploited yet. All partners are facing the same in history-based problem – all towns has lost important natural and historical heritage by the rivers in changes of times, historical memory of riverside towns’ glorious past, what they want to show in modern way using modern technologies.  With the construction of hydroelectric power station of Plaviņas, Koknese under water of Daugava lost important natural heritage objects – waterfall of Perse river, beautiful landscapes of ancient Daugava river, historical places of Koknese. By flooding Daugava, Jaunjelgava lost famous Staburags rock. Located nearby the Nemunas, Kulautuva and Kačerginė towns in Kaunas district during interwar period had been prestigious summer resorts in Lithuania, which used to attract thousands of visitors – famous Lithuanian politicians, scientists, writers, artists, intellectuals, foreign tourists. These places astonished by the untouched nature, architecture and peace. Later on, these towns have gone into oblivion. One of project aims is to show lost times and values of lives by rivers and rise memories of previous popularity of tourism destinations and to rise interest to visit these places nowadays.
The overall objective of the project is to enhance tourism development built upon the historical and cultural heritage linked to living by the rivers and attract tourists to rivers in three ways – to offer new destinations and on history based products at existing tourism sites; to attract new tourists and to invite tourists who already have been in current places to come back and see new offer; to prolong their stay in project and programme area by using modern technologies such as a virtual guide mobile app, infoterminal, or by exploring unique history of current place and offer to return to destinations for cultural events and festivals that regularly repeat.
The main project outputs are increase in expected number of visits to supported sites of cultural and natural heritage and attractions – 9000 visitors. Cross border cooperation is needed to strengthen cooperation for managing of tourism flows in the future by promoting  each others destinations, because for destinations which are located more than one hour-driving away from capital city need more efforts to attract tourists. Within the project partners will create new tourism products to attract tourist interest of existing tourism destinations related to ancient and modern history of destinations (exhibits of Ancient boat park in Koknese near castle ruins and Mineral water buvette as symbol of popular resort place in interwar period in Kulautuva); modern technologies for exploring destinations in a modern way, offer of regular cultural events.
