The project “Development of eco-tourism by using water resources in Latvia and Lithuania” (Learn Eco Travel) LLI-349 was launched by seven partners in Latgale and Aukštaitija – municipalities of Preili, Riebini and Aglona in Latvia, the districts of Anyksciai and Moletai, Panevezys, as well as the regional parks of Sartu and Grazute in Lithuania. The promotion of tourism is a complex measure – not only the improvement of recreational sites is necessary, but also the education of service providers and cooperation between entrepreneurs and municipalities. Therefore, during the project from from May 2, 2018 until February 1, 2020, the local governments and organizations carried out various and diverse activities to develop environmentally friendly tourism in the region.
Partners territories were equipped with a water equipment and infrastructure objects, and recreation sites were improved to promote the attractiveness of these areas in the eyes of tourists. Infrastructure and equipment in Preili, Moletai and Sartu and Grazute regional parks were adjusted for a people with disabilities as well.
A capacity building seminar for tourism stakeholders, a practical seminar for nature interpreters, local guides and park guides and a brainstorm meeting were organized to raise the awareness on cultural and natural heritage objects.
3 common tourism routes “I travel for Nature”; “Travel with no limits”; “7 Days – 7 Lakes” in Latvia and Lithuania were developed.
Environmentally friendly attitude was promoted by organizing 2 adventure camps for children.
An interactive APP “Pure water” was developed, through which every visitor of lakes, rivers and ponds can try to determine the water quality of the particular water body and learn to recognize animals and plants living in water and shore.

4 tourism festivals were organized – Lake festival in Rušonas lake, Eco-festival in Aizkalne, Nature festival in Grazute regional park, in Sabalunkos campsite, winter festival in Panevežys city.
A water biodiversity was investigated in Šventas lake, LT.
A common “Ecotourism Development Strategy in years 2019-2023 in cross-border areas” was developed. It is a practical document containing specific recommendations for each municipality involved in the project, in order to promote environmentally friendly tourism. Strategy is available in Latvian and English in all project partners web pages.
