Natural restoration and landscaping works are actively continuing in the territory of the Ruģeļi reservoir, which is one of two locations of the “UrbUmbrella” project activities. The project aims to promote the protection and conservation of biodiversity affected by climate change and human activity. Currently, active work is underway at the Ruģeļi reservoir, where the environment is being cleaned up and an accessible, safe, and modern recreational area is being created for everyone.
Within the framework of the project, two interrelated groups of activities are being implemented. Scientifically based wetland restoration works are taking place at the Ruģeļi ponds and in areas adjacent to the Daugava River, while at the Ruģeļi reservoir, mostly landscaping and infrastructure improvements are being carried out. Nature restoration measures are based on research by Daugavpils University scientists, bioclimatic modeling, and expert recommendations. Their aim is to preserve and improve the condition of wetland ecosystems, reduce habitat degradation, and promote the conservation of amphibians, reptiles, and other species.
Simultaneously, the most visible changes for residents are occurring at the Ruģeļi reservoir. Until now, the area’s infrastructure and overall landscape were insufficiently tidy, which is why extensive landscaping works are being carried out within the project. Uncontrolled paths are being regulated, a dog walking area is being created, active recreation spots for children, sensory paths, and boardwalks for easier movement are being built. The area will also feature toilets with changing tables for babies, changing rooms, waste containers, and informational stands about project activities and Ruģeļi wetland biodiversity.
During the works, a part of the reservoir’s shore has been cleaned and reeds have been removed. Although water quality meets the specified requirements and swimming is not prohibited, residents are encouraged to exercise caution, as sharp reed remnants may still be present in the natural bottom. After the works are completed, the area will be safer, tidier, and more easily accessible to both local residents and city guests.
Informative and educational activities are also being implemented within the project. A digital wetland management system is being developed, which will allow residents to report observed species and environmental problems, as well as obtain information about the importance of wetlands. Additional information about the Ruģeļi wetland and its species is already available in the “Latgales Zoo-Wetland” app, and interactive educational tools will also be available on the www.urbanwetland.eu platform in the future, which is now under reconstructure for UrbUmbrella project needs.
Wetlands are among the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. They help purify water, store carbon, mitigate the effects of climate change, and provide habitat for many plant and animal species. The UrbUmbrella project helps preserve these values for future generations, while creating a clean and accessible environment for residents’ recreation and education.
Works at the Ruģeļi reservoir are still ongoing, so residents are asked to be understanding and patient. In the near future, the area will have a new look, combining nature protection, sustainable management, and high-quality public infrastructure.
