Yesterday, the library’s seminar room felt like a real beehive!
Although honey, wax, propolis, and royal jelly have magical properties and natural cosmetics made from them seem easy to prepare, the reality is much more complex. Cosmetics chemist and Baju Lab expert Jurgita Barbaravičienė revealed that natural ingredients are extremely capricious: their healing properties and aromas have a limited shelf life, their texture is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, and herbs tend to oxidize.
When creating a high‑quality product, determination alone is not enough – specific education, deep knowledge, and careful attention to detail are essential. The seminar was full of practical nuances: from assessing the quality of raw materials to navigating complex certification processes. It was wonderful to see the connection between chemical science and beekeepers’ experience while searching for solutions for sustainable packaging or comparing our practices with the achievements of our Latvian neighbors.
The highlight of the event was making a cooling balm with beeswax. We returned home not only with gifts but also with a basket full of new knowledge!
The creative workshop/seminar is organized as part of the 2021–2027 Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Cross-border Cooperation Programme, under Priority 4 “Economic Tourism and Heritage Potential,” within the project “Enhancing Tourism Through the Development of the Bee Route from Kuršėnai to Ventspils” (Project code: LL‑00198, acronym: Busy Bee / Užimta bitė).
