Connecting Generations in Diversity

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Latvia and Lithuania, similarly to trends worldwide, are experiencing a growing senior population facing social isolation and loneliness. Concurrently, youth from disadvantaged backgrounds also confront the risk of isolation, maladaptive behaviour, and loneliness. Both groups require assistance and support, to find a sense of belonging and purpose. While social services play a role, mutual interaction, joint activities, and the sharing of experiences and skills also foster this connection.

Project objective

The project aims to develop an innovative intergenerational approach to engage seniors and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds, encouraging them to share experience and offer mutual support. This approach will combine elements of Healthy Ageing (HA) and Positive Youth Development (PYD), such as competence, connection, caring, physical and emotional well-being.

Planned activities

The project activities include initiatives for both target groups—seniors and youth—as well as specialized activities for professionals. For seniors and youth, the project will feature well-being events, group meetings, well-being sessions, the development of hiking routes in Kretinga, Palanga, and Tukums, individual consultations, and meetings with well-known public figures to raise awareness of issues such as substance use and bullying. For professionals, the project will offer a developed training program and guidelines, training sessions on various aspects of healthy living and aging, and the selection and training of volunteers. The developed intergenerational approach will be piloted through various project activities, and later developed into guidelines for specialists and services providing community-based social work. The approach will provide social work specialists with a new tool to enhance their work with the target groups, expanding the scope of activities and community-based social work initiatives.
