Evaluation and Maintenance of Trees and Parks for Biodiversity
Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project
In Northern Lithuania and Latvia’s Kurzeme and Zemgale regions, old and protected trees, alleys and parks provide important ecological functions and support biodiversity, but are increasingly threatened by ageing, climate change, soil degradation, and human activity. At the same time, data on their condition is limited, and public awareness of their ecological value remains low. The project addresses these common challenges by improving protection, management, and sustainable care using data-driven methods and cross-border cooperation.Project objective
The project aims to improve the protection, management and vitality of old and protected trees, two alleys and nine parks in Lithuania and Latvia by developing and applying data- and science-based conservation solutions. Activities include tree condition assessment, soil and biodiversity research, development of management plans and recommendations, restoration measures, and creation of a GIS database of tree alleys. The project will raise awareness, strengthen institutional capacity and promote evidence-based decision-making to safeguard tree-related biodiversity.Planned activities
The project will develop and pilot improved methods for tree condition assessment and monitoring, including soil, root system and biodiversity research. Conservation recommendations and management plans will be prepared, and restoration actions implemented for selected trees, parks and alleys. Notably, advanced monitoring technologies will be applied to the Stelmužė Oak – the oldest and largest tree in Lithuania and one of the oldest in Europe (estimated 1000–2000 years old). A GIS database of tree alleys will be created in Zemgale region. Municipalities, environmental institutions and professionals will participate in workshops, training sessions and study visits. Local communities will be engaged through Park Days, guided tours, educational materials and films. Public communication will raise awareness of the ecological and cultural value of old trees. The project also aims to harmonise methodologies and practices between Lithuania and Latvia, increasing capacity for long-term conservation and sustainable management of green infrastructure.Social media and contacts:
