Healthy Lifestyle “A Billion Steps Challenge”

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The common challenge faced by both Latvia and Lithuania is the low level of physical activity among their populations, leading to poor public health outcomes, such as increased rates of chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular issues. This issue is compounded by sedentary lifestyles, lack of infrastructure, and insufficient focus on active living in policies.

Project objective

The project aims to promote physical activity among the residents of Biržai, Ignalina, and Šiauliai municipalities in Lithuania, and the Latgale and Kurzeme regions in Latvia by launching the innovative cross-border “Billion Steps Challenge”. It seeks to inspire residents to adopt healthier lifestyles through tools and incentives that encourage regular physical activity.

Planned activities

The project will develop an interactive healthy lifestyle platform with custom walking trails, step-counting mobile apps to track achievements. Its’ extensive outreach campaign s, including public events, publications, and virtual activities, the challenge will inspire participants to compete with each other . Healthy lifestyle volunteers will be trained and act as ambassadors i to engage participants and promote the challenge. The project targets company employees, school communities, and the general public, organizing training sessions, hikes, and camps. It also involves regional decision-makers to foster a positive and sustainable attitude toward healthy lifestyle principles. This project’s innovative aspect lies in its regional collaboration and the development of accessible tools to encourage physical activity. This initiative will boost physical activity, promote a culture of healthy living, and strengthen cross-border collaboration.
