Bringing New Ideas Home: Lessons from Italy on Rehabilitation and Inclusion

Under the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 project “Innovative psychosocial and physical rehabilitation methods for stress reduction, inclusion of socially vulnerable groups of persons in society” (INO INCLUSION, No. LL-00120), representatives from VSIA “Piejūras slimnīca” (Liepaja), St. Francis of Assisi Monastery (Klaipeda), and Palanga “Pušynas” Rehabilitation Branch of PI Republican Hospital of Klaipėda (Palanga) spent five days in Italy on a study visit focused on learning innovative approaches to stress management and rehabilitation in the first week of October, 2025.
During the study visit, participants had the opportunity to visit several leading Italian institutions — Fondazione Raggio Verde, Fondazione MAIC, and the Memento Interdisciplinary Neurorehabilitation Group. These visits provided valuable insight into how rehabilitation and social inclusion services are organized, delivered, and how target groups are actively involved in the process.
In Memento Interdisciplinary Neurorehabilitation Group, specialists were introduced to modern neurorehabilitation techniques for patients with neurological and cognitive impairments.  From the Day Center for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders “Fandiazione Raggio Verde” Participants learned about individualized support programmes for people with autism spectrum disorders, including methods to develop communication, social, and daily living skills. The center demonstrated how structured routines, sensory-friendly environments, and close collaboration with families contribute to improving the clients’ quality of life and independence. At Fondazione MAIC, the visitors observed an integrated rehabilitation model that combines physical, occupational, psychological, and social therapies. The center focuses on a holistic approach to patient care, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork and continuous professional development. Participants also learned about MAIC’s innovative use of assistive technologies and adaptive equipment to enhance therapy effectiveness.
Through the study visit, project partners strengthened their professional knowledge and built international connections. They exchanged best practices, gained inspiration for improving service quality, and deepened their understanding of cross-cultural and institutional collaboration in the field of rehabilitation and social inclusion.
