On March 26 of this year, the kick-off meeting of the WaterWays project took place in Kuldīga with a meeting of all partners! During it, the works to be carried out within the project were discussed, and to strengthen the spirit of the project team, Kuldīga’s Aleksupīte was explored together.
The aim of the project is to develop water tourism in Latvia and Lithuania, continuing to develop the existing cross-border tourism product riversways.eu, creating a network of navigable rivers and lakes with recreational activities. As a result of the cross-border cooperation, common comprehensive information on water tourism-based activities in lakes and rivers will be published on www.riverways.eu and combined with targeted marketing activities will reduce the chaotic flow of tourists. The “Safe&Green” concept will promote safe and nature-friendly tourism and reduce the anthropogenic load on the natural resources used for tourism, as well as promote a more responsible and educated traveler society.
Kurzeme Planning Region will promote the development of water tourism together with the municipalities of Kurzeme – Kuldīgas, Saldus, Talsi counties and Liepāja state city, as well as partners from Lithuania Klaipėdos rajono savivaldybė, Kretingos rajono savivaldybės administracija and Lietuvos kaimo turizmo asociacija.
The project will last for 2 years and during that time we will implement infrastructure and accessibility improvements at 6 water bodies in Kurzeme and Klaipėda region, inspect 300 lakes and more than 30 rivers in Kurzeme, Latgale, Zemgale and Lithuania and prepare a wide and useful river and lake tourism guide, significantly supplement the upesoga.lv homepage with new water tourism offers and opportunities in Latvia and Lithuania!
