On June 18th and 19th, a training course in HEC-RAS modelling was held within the frame of the ICEREG project (LL-00136).

The training course took place in Kaunas, in the premises of Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI). Its main objective was capacity raising for the project experts responsible for ice-jam flood risk evaluation and mapping in the pilot rivers.

Representatives of the Lead Partner – Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC) provided a specific training programme on the HEC-RAS focused on extreme flow-water level simulation and flood risk mapping.

In the first day, several presentations about the HEC-RAS model approach and the software applications were held by LEGMC experts. Theoretical part was followed by the practical testing of the model based on geometry data of Lielupe and Īslīce rivers (Latvia).

During the second day, presentation and practical testing of the Steady flow calculations in the HEC-RAS model were provided, for flood risk modelling and mapping on the basis of Lielupe and Īslīce rivers.

All practical exercises were carried out in the “learning by doing” format, taking into account the work experience of Latvian experts in the flood risk modelling using HEC-RAS.

The training course was attended by four experts from LEGMC and 7 experts from LEI.
