Growing Resilient and Eco-friendly Environments in Urban Neighborhoods in Siauliai and Liepaja

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Šiauliai in Lithuania and Liepāja in Latvia face shared challenges from climate change, urbanisation, and insufficient green infrastructure, leading to more frequent heatwaves and environmental risks. Despite EU and national requirements for Greenery Plans, both cities lack investment, expertise, strategic measures to develop green spaces and improve climate resilience.

Project objective

The GREEN project aims to enhance urban resilience by strengthening green infrastructure planning and mitigating heat waves. It will foster cooperation among public authorities, researchers, businesses, and local communities, equipping stakeholders with knowledge to implement effective measures.

Planned activities

The project will produce Greenery Plans for Šiauliai and Liepāja, providing strategic guidelines for green infrastructure development. Research on heatwaves will be conducted, and its findings will be integrated into these plans as well. Green spaces will be developed in both cities as part of the Greenery Plan. To engage communities, a competition will be held for local public spaces greening initiatives, and the top three voted ideas will be implemented in each city. A cross-border approach will enhance knowledge exchange, strengthen collaboration, create shared solutions to climate challenges. The project will improve urban resilience, engage stakeholders, benefit local residents, set a replicable standard for sustainable green infrastructure in the region.
