Community engagement through preserving Jewish heritage in the cross-border regions of Lithuania and Latvia

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The Jewish legacy in Lithuania and Latvia is often overshadowed by the Holocaust and wartime hardships, leading to a diminished recognition of its contribution to regions’ economy and culture. Fragmented records, fading traditions, and low public awareness threaten this heritage. The historical sites, like the synagogues, remain as tangible heritage worth saving, while individuals seeking ancestral connections highlight the need for efforts to preserve and rebuild Jewish narratives.

Project objective

The project aims to raise awareness, appreciation, and understanding of Jewish traditions and their contributions to the region’s cultural fabric. It is expected to increase public awareness on Jewish heritage in the region and to involve members of society of diverse ages in the preservation of cultural heritage.

Planned activities

The project key outputs include a virtual platform and a virtual reality game to engage youth and the wider community in interactive learning. Project partners will collaborate with artists and local historians in neighbouring countries to ensure thorough documentation and preservation of Jewish artefacts and narratives. The project planned activities include Jewish art education, community workshops, art plein airs, exhibitions, holiday celebrations, and children and youth camps at Joniškis, Žagare, Tukums, and Kandava synagogues and cultural sites. The virtual platform and VR game will also be presented to the public. The project’s originality lies in its innovative use of technology to revitalise Jewish heritage and inspire younger generations. By celebrating this shared history the project will contribute to the region’s cultural diversity and encourage collective efforts to preserve its rich heritage.
