On June 10, 2025, social work specialists from various branches of the State Social Care Center “Latgale” and a representative of the Kalupe Parish Library gathered for a focus group discussion. The participants work with vulnerable groups, including children, seniors, and individuals with mental disabilities.
The event was organized within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027, under the project SoCreative (LL-00272) titled “Enhancing social inclusion and empowerment of vulnerable groups through integrated and creative methodologies”.
The main objective of the meeting was to conduct a situational analysis and identify the needs and expectations of social work professionals concerning the use of creative methods and the integration of innovations into the provision of social services. The discussion explored which creative approaches are most effective and what knowledge or methodological support is needed to ensure their sustainable and confident use in daily practice.
Particular attention was given to activities such as ceramics, aromatherapy, and candle making, which were recognized as having a unique and positive impact on the well-being of vulnerable individuals:
- Ceramics and clay modeling help improve fine motor skills, reduce anxiety, and encourage focus and engagement. Working with natural materials promotes inner calm and provides a sense of satisfaction through creative expression.
- Aromatherapy sessions contribute to emotional well-being, reduce stress, and help create a calming environment.
- Candle making techniques enhance creativity, support emotional expression, and develop fine motor coordination, offering a therapeutic and fulfilling experience.
Participants unanimously agreed that integrating such creative activities into social service delivery not only enriches clients’ everyday lives but also contributes to deeper emotional and social transformation. During the focus group discussion, several key issues were addressed that will inform the development of a methodological guide for professionals during the project.
This meeting marked an important step toward building a sustainable, creativity-oriented social service system—one in which art becomes an integral part of daily care and support.
