Skills and knowledge endure as long as they remain relevant in people’s lives—preserved, practiced, valued, and passed down through generations. They fade away when society no longer needs them, or when methods or techniques are no longer applied in modern times.
In response to urbanization and industrialization, many people around the world are returning to handmade objects that embody the knowledge and cultural values passed down by craftsmen and artisans.
To preserve these invaluable skills and inspire society, the Latgale Planning Region is producing 10 captivating and educational videos showcasing Latgale’s craftsmen and the continued relevance of their work. This initiative is part of the Digital Tourism in Crafts project (D-Tour; No LL-00100).
Soon, we will have the chance to meet 10 talented Latgalian craftsmen and learn about their experiences in preserving and applying their skills in today’s world. The videos will highlight various traditional techniques, including needlework, plant-based yarn dyeing, wood carving, crochet, embroidery, bead knitting, music instrument making, hemp products, soap making, and stained glass. This project presents an excellent opportunity to inspire craft enthusiasts, those eager to learn new skills, and anyone interested in exploring the rich cultural heritage of Latgale!
