Launch of the cultural tourism project

The Šilutė H. Scheu museum (Lithuania), in collaboration with the Kuldīga Municipality Administration (Latvia), has launched the project “Heritage Horizons: Švėkšna and Kuldīga Then and Now.” The project is being implemented under the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021–2027, co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund as well as by the budgets of the Šilutė District and Kuldīga municipalities. The project lead partner is the Šilutė H. Scheu museum.

The project’s goal is to create a tourist route connecting Švėkšna in Lithuania and Kuldīga in Latvia. This route will showcase restored historical sites and provide interactive educational experiences, promoting cultural exchange, attracting tourists, and creating new opportunities for employment and tourism activities.

The project includes the renovation of the former Švėkšna synagogue, the preservation of Kuldīga’s medieval cellar, the development of gamified exhibitions, and the creation of a unified tourism route. It is expected that an increase in tourist traffic, economic growth, and improved heritage preservation will benefit local communities, businesses, and heritage professionals.

International cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia will help develop a cohesive tourist experience. The project will establish a sustainable model that can be adapted to other routes, fostering collaboration and cultural exchange across the Baltic region.

The project start date – March 3, 2025, the project end date – March 2, 2027. The total budget  – 748 701,44 EUR, including ERDF –  598,961,15 EUR. Project number – LL-00230.
