LingoKey project fosters cross-border connections through community events

The LingoKey project is currently being implemented across 8 schools in Latvia and Lithuania. This comprehensive initiative has developed a specialized methodology for learning Latvian and Lithuanian languages. Beyond its educational curriculum in schools, LingoKey aims to engage wider communities in language learning activities to foster cross-border communication and cultural exchange.

With this broader mission in mind, LingoKey organized a series of community events in April, 2025. These public gatherings took place in Joniškis (Lithuania), Aucė (Latvia), Augstkalnė (Latvia), and Riga (Latvia), bringing together community members of all ages interested in language learning and cultural exchange. These gatherings provided invaluable opportunities for community members to practice language skills in authentic settings while simultaneously learning about the cultural heritage of neighboring regions. The April events represented a significant initiative in the LingoKey project’s broader mission, extending language learning beyond classrooms into community spaces.

During these community gatherings, participants immersed themselves in the rich folklore and traditions characteristic of each region. Local cultural experts introduced attendees to traditional songs, interactive games, and regional dances that have been passed down through generations. These activities not only reinforced language learning but also deepened participants’ appreciation for the cultural heritage shared across the Latvia-Lithuania border region.

“Seeing community members of various ages confidently engaging with new languages while participating in traditional activities was truly remarkable,” noted one of the LingoKey project coordinators. “The cultural component adds meaningful context to the language learning journey.”

Educational activities formed the core of these community events, carefully designed to reinforce vocabulary while encouraging spontaneous communication. Perhaps most significantly, these gatherings created natural opportunities for people from different communities to communicate with each other in Latvian and Lithuanian. The supportive environment allowed everyone to practice without fear of making mistakes, building confidence in language learning among community members of all ages.

The LingoKey team summarizes the achievements with enthusiasm: “We communicate, make friends and continue to learn together!” This spirit of collaborative learning will carry forward as the project continues to develop new ways to engage communities in language learning.
