New recreation areas along the border river Nemunėlis (Mēmele)

The Directorate of Aukštaitija Protected Areas, implementing the project No. LL-00134 “Enhancement of sustainable water tourism in Lithuania-Latvia cross-border region, involving local entrepreneurs and communities” (WaterTour) is developing recreation areas along the border river Nemunėlis (Mēmele).

With the goal of promoting sustainable water tourism and creating more favorable conditions for local entrepreneurs, three resting areas have been installed along the Nemunėlis (Mēmele) river. The installed resting places in Panemunė, Pučiakalnė, and Germaniškis provide a perfect opportunity to relax in nature and to learn about the river, established protected areas, and biodiversity.

Each resting place consists of four benches, a table, a fireplace, as well as an informational stand. Later in the project, as part of the arrangement of information for water tourists along the joint tourism route in the cross-border area, the installed resting places and sightseeing objects will be marked by signs along the Nemunėlis river. In total, 15 signs will be installed.

During the project, the Directorate of Aukštaitija Protected Areas aims to create water routes and install infrastructure along the Nemunėlis (Mēmele) river in Biržai district and the Šventoji river in Gražutė and Anykščiai regional parks. The results of project activities are likely to attract more visitors to the border region while creating opportunities for local communities, businesses, and tourism providers.

The project is funded by the Interreg VI-A Latvia – Lithuania Programme 2021-2027.
