The project LL-00055 LingoKey partners have launched an innovative language learning program designed to foster linguistic exchange between Lithuanian and Latvian students. As part of this initiative, pilot classes are currently being conducted at eight schools in Lithuania and Latvia. These pilot classes are essential for testing and refining a new language learning methodology that encourages real-life communication and cross-cultural interaction. By implementing structured sessions in a controlled environment, educators can assess the effectiveness of teaching strategies, address potential challenges, and make necessary improvements before expanding the program further.
This program features a custom-developed methodology, collaboratively designed by cross-border partner organizations with expertise in language instruction and proficiency in both Lithuanian and Latvian. The program employs an authentic approach to language acquisition, organizing participants into three distinct learning groups. Each group consists of two Lithuanian partners and one Latvian partner, creating an immersive environment for cross-cultural communication. Students attend classes at their home institutions for three-week periods, followed by remote sessions where they practice and share their newly acquired language skills with peers across the border.
The language course covers essential conversational topics designed to build practical communication skills, including:
- Introductions and greetings
- Numbers and counting
- Time concepts (weeks, months, seasons)
- Colors and descriptions
- Courtesy and polite expressions
- Family relations
- School vocabulary
- City navigation
- Hobbies and interests
- Pet-related terminology
- Shopping vocabulary
- Vacation and travel phrases
Each of the eight participating schools has approved a structured schedule for the pilot classes, ensuring an organized approach to language learning. Following the completion of these classes, educators will share their experiences, evaluate student progress, and make necessary adjustments to the teaching methodology to enhance future language learning efforts.
What makes this program particularly effective is its reciprocal nature. Through structured and interactive classroom activities and special events, Lithuanian children gain proficiency in Latvian while their Latvian counterparts simultaneously learn Lithuanian. This bilateral approach not only enhances language acquisition but also strengthens cultural ties between neighboring Baltic nations, deepening the students’ appreciation of each other’s language and traditions.
The LingoKey project represents an important step in promoting regional linguistic diversity and cross-border communication skills among the younger generation.
