Schoolchildren embrace Lithuanian and Latvian language learning through LingoKey project

The innovative LingoKey project is currently being implemented across 8 schools in Latvia and Lithuania. This comprehensive initiative has developed a specialized methodology for learning Latvian and Lithuanian languages, with pilot classes following this approach in all participating schools. Joniškis Primary School is proud to be among these educational institutions conducting these pilot classes.

Students from Joniškis Primary School are making remarkable progress in their Latvian language studies thanks to this innovative approach. The pilot class has been enthusiastically participating in structured monthly learning modules that make language acquisition both engaging and effective.

The LingoKey methodology divides each month into four comprehensive lessons focused on a single theme. This approach ensures students build vocabulary systematically while reinforcing previously learned material through a variety of educational activities. Students face new challenges weekly as they discover new words, engage in educational games, sing songs, and participate in interactive tasks.

March’s curriculum centered around the theme of “School,” introducing students to essential classroom vocabulary and communication skills. The young learners mastered the Latvian names for classroom objects, learned proper ways to address teachers and classmates, and developed the ability to discuss their favorite subjects in Latvian.

According to teachers, the active, hands-on learning components have proven especially popular among students. In one particularly engaging exercise, students were instructed to unpack their backpacks, count their belongings, and document them on worksheets – all using their newly acquired Latvian vocabulary. Another well-received activity challenged students to rapidly identify classroom objects in Latvian, effectively testing and strengthening both their vocabulary recall and pronunciation skills.

The structured yet dynamic approach of the LingoKey project continues to demonstrate how language learning can be transformed from a potentially challenging subject into an interactive, enjoyable experience that naturally builds linguistic competence through consistent engagement.
