Specialists in Zemgale and Northern Lithuania Gain New Skills for Working with Seniors

,

In October, specialists completed training on various aspects of aging and pedagogical approaches for working with seniors as part of the “Promotion of Active and Healthy Aging” project. These newly acquired skills will help them lead workshops for seniors in both Latvia and Lithuania, focusing on Storytelling and Active Aging.

From September 9 to October 17, training sessions were held for specialists who work daily with seniors. The sessions covered a wide range of topics on the five dimensions of aging: health (both physical and mental), learning, self-image, social life, and economic independence. More than 20 professionals from Latvia and Lithuania participated, creating an inspiring and collaborative learning environment that fostered cross-border cooperation. During the sessions, participants gained not only a solid theoretical foundation but also valuable practical experience, such as learning specific exercises led by a certified physiotherapist.

The specialists highlighted the diversity and usefulness of the information provided, as well as the new methods and tools they can apply in their future work. Many also emphasized how the training allowed them to view the aging process from a fresh perspective and understand how certain choices can enhance its quality. For example, recognizing the physical aspects of aging enables specialists to plan suitable activities that help seniors maintain physical health for as long as possible. Meanwhile, understanding the importance of socialization allows for the intentional formation of interest groups and support networks. “Every stage of life is important, and our goal is to help seniors realize this,” concluded the specialists at the end of the training.

This second cycle of autumn training sessions on active aging is part of the program developed within the project to comprehensively prepare specialists for working with seniors. The program ensures a well-rounded understanding of the physical, psychological, and social changes associated with aging. Previously, in August, pilot training sessions were conducted, focusing on Storytelling and its effective application. This technique helps seniors appreciate the value of their life experiences and opens up new possibilities for a fulfilling future.

Following the completion of this training cycle, the project will continue with the development of a handbook that compiles the knowledge gained during the sessions. This resource will serve as a guide for conducting workshops directly with seniors, further supporting their active and healthy aging journey.
