The physical activity of Lithuanian and Latvian residents was promoted by organizing a hike through the old Karpėnai quarries

On May 1, the Akmenė District Municipality Public Health Bureau organized a 15-kilometer hike through the Karpėnai quarries as part of the project “Active involvement of communities  to improve healthy lifestyle habits” (No. LL-00167). The project is financed by the Interreg VI-A Latvia-Lithuania Programme 2021-2027. Both local residents and guests from neighboring Latvia were invited to participate.

On that early spring morning, the hikers were greeted not only by pleasant weather but also by a great mood. Led by the experienced trainer Valdas Rubel, the participants set off on an unforgettable journey through the Karpėnai quarry landscapes, which have become one of the region’s most attractive attractions thanks to their exceptional beauty and diversity of nature. The 15-kilometer route led through spectacular natural spots, past cliffs, swirling pools of water, and panoramic horizons. The organizers noted that such initiatives encourage physical activity and help people learn more about the area’s history and natural wealth. “This hike is not only a physical challenge, but also an opportunity to enjoy togetherness, get to know one’s land, and strengthen cross-border ties with neighboring Latvia,” said the Akmenė District Municipality Public Health Bureau organizers of the event. People of all ages attended the event, which had a warm and friendly atmosphere. The common challenge of overcoming uneven road surfaces brought all participants closer together.

The hike through the old Karpėnai quarries is part of the larger “Active Involvement of Communities in the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle Habits” project (No. LL-00167), which is funded by the Interreg VI-A Latvia-Lithuania Programme 2021-2027. This project aims to promote active lifestyles, strengthen community ties, and encourage international collaboration in promoting healthy lifestyles.

The event organizer of the Akmenė District Municipality Public Health Bureau is planning more events like this one and invites anyone interested in active leisure to stay tuned for information about future initiatives.
