The Safe and Diverse project partners have reached an exciting milestone by reviewing the first animatic (draft animation) of an educational film designed for children aged 5–7. This cartoon aims to teach fundamental lessons about waste-free living, and sustainable tourism in a fun and engaging way.
A Familiar Story Comes to Life
The animated film breathes new life into characters Šiukšlius and Eko, created by Biržai-based illustrator and designer Gie Vilke. (“Šiukšlius” – a name derived from the word “trash,” meaning someone who litters). These characters, already known to Birzai children, together with Lotte and Carl – friends form Aizkraukle (Latvia) guide young viewers through lessons on protecting the environment and making sustainable choices. Heroes from Lithuania and Latvia tackle challenges like sorting trash, composting, and addressing improper disposal of waste, showcasing simple actions to protect biodiversity.
Key Features
The animation, produced by Vytautas Rimkus, are visually captivating, blending playful characters with educational content tailored for preschool-aged children. The project emphasizes inclusivity, offering versions in Lithuanian, Latvian, and English, with adaptations for visually and hearing-impaired audiences.
With this cartoon the Safe and Diverse project takes a step forward in inspiring young minds to adopt environmentally friendly practices. It reinforces the importance of nurturing environmental consciousness from an early age, empowering the next generation to become champions of sustainability.
The animated film is part of the Interreg VI-A Latvia–Lithuania Programme 2021-2027 Project No. LL-00045 “Protection of biodiversity and green infrastructure by development of the sustainable management of areas used for recreation in Birzai and Aizkraukle” / Safe and diverse . The project is implemented by the Birzai District Municipality Administration in partnership with the Aizkraukle Municipality (Latvia).
Project Goal: Strengthened cooperation between Birzai and Aizkraukle in sustainably managing recreational areas, protecting biodiversity, and preserving coastal ecosystems.
