As the first period of project LL-00077 “Response and prevention of climate change risks and extreme weather events in the cross-border region of Latvia and Lithuania” (Safe Response) is coming to an end, it is time to look back at the activities that were done during this time.
Project’s objective is to strengthen cross-border municipalities’ emergency response, fire protection, and civil protection capacity and cooperation to address climate change-related risks. To reach this goal partners have started implementing first project activities right after the online kick-off meeting, which was held on March 26.
Jelgava local municipality has started discussions on procedures for buying Equipment for civil protection emergency service. Procurement for infrastructure works has been organized, finished and works have started. In order to ensure the fire safety of Jēkabnieku village and its surroundings in the event of a fire, until now there has been a critical need for the restoration of the closed water reservoir for extinguishing the fire and the construction of water intake points.
Bauska municipality government is planning to install a drinking water filling station in Iecava. Lately Bauska has been dealing with unpredictable weather conditions and the risks they create. One of them has been the unusual heat, during which it is essential to take care of the availability of drinking water for both people and their pets. To solve this, the water filling station will be installed near the multifunctional recreation area of the city of Iecava, which is a densely populated area. The planned delivery time of the drinking water filling station is the month of August when the installation of the equipment will also begin. Bauska municipality concluded procurement for the organization of training for specialists. In August it is planned to start organizing training for the municipal police officers of Bauska region and for municipal employees.
Joniskis District Municipality Administration have started planning their equipment needs and have conducted a price survey for equipment purchases. Pakruojis District Municipality Administration have also started their public procurement procedures for part of planned equipment.
The leading partner of the project, the Zemgale planning region, organized the opening event of the project in the first period, and also started working on several activities – Organization of seminars about climate change risks and extreme weather events in Latvia and Lithuania, Organization of Exchange of experience visit to Poland for project partners and local security actors, development of technical specification for Provision of the input study and elaboration of the cross border emergency response plan.
