Bird-watching network along the Baltic coast

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Since COVID-19 tourists' behaviour has changed - open-air tourism activities and nature trails have become popular, thus responding to behavioral changes is required. For all partners it is important creating economically beneficial and sustainable tourism offers, to attract tourists, boost economic benefits for local economies via tourist visits. The new bird-watching network will provide an opportunity to prolong the tourism season. The big number of common migratory birds brings common value to the whole project region and offers wider bird exploring opportunities. Also, the joint bird-watching network will be useful to all the population from partners regions. Project partners also want to educate society about responsible and sustainable tourism, about the value of the nature.

Project objective

Overall project objective is to create new tourism offer - bird-watching network by combining 18 bird-watching sites - thus prolonging the tourism season in the project region, increasing the number of tourists visiting project region, creating new open-air resting activities for local citizens, and bringing economical benefits to the region. By creating a new tourism offer using nature resources, nature preservation topics will be addressed as well.

Planned activities

Partners will implement multiple joint activities: create a joint brochure about the new network, create joint promotion video, joint promotion articles, organize joint study trip to learn about best bird-watching tourism practices, organize 2 excursions for wider public to show the results of the project, organize a joint seminar to raise tourism specialists` professional skills, to improve cooperation between tourism offices, participate in exhibitions. Joint communication and publicity activities will be done as well. Liepaja will improve the existing bird-watching sites, create a new one and unite them into the new cross-border network. Liepaja will renew 3 info stands, design new info plaques with information about bird species seen in Liepaja Lake, purchase binoculars, install virtual reality telescope-binocular, create an educational environmental installation on Zirgu Island. 2 educational events will be organized to educate society about bird-watching tourism, about sustainable tourism, addressing nature protection topics as well. Klaipeda will create 360 movie “Flight of a bird, add additional section in www.klaipedosrajonas.lv about bird-watching, create a quiz and a puzzle about bird-watching topics, improve existing infoterminal by adding info about the new network there, create interactive stand and hologram stand, implement publicity campaign in portal “We love Lithuanian”, purchase bird-watching equipment. Dienvidkurzeme will improve tourism center in Pape and to set up a permanent exhibition and educational place about birds and bird-watching. Dienvidkurzeme will also create audio guide, purchase bird pictures and audio recordings of bird voices, create 6 new info stands with information about bird-watching topics, purchase bird-watching related equipment, organize 1 hiking event with ornithologist.
