Bridging borders: Libraries promoting social inclusion in Latvia and Lithuania

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The common challenge faced by Latvia and Lithuania is the high risk of social exclusion, particularly among vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with disabilities. Despite efforts to improve accessibility and provide services, these groups remain isolated in regions like Ludza, Rokiškis, and Šiauliai, where poverty and exclusion rates are higher than average.

Project objective

The project aims to foster greater social inclusion and integration for people with disabilities and the elderly in Ludza, Rokiškis, and Šiauliai, ultimately contributing to a fairer, more inclusive society.

Planned activities

By applying modern technologies and the STEAM approach, the project will develop 20 specialized programs and run 65 classes for people with disabilities, along with organizing 30 sensory reading sessions. It will also improve accessibility, including constructing of a lift in Ludza Library, which will allow better access for individuals with mobility issues. Over 100 educational and entertaining activities will be offered to engage the elderly and strengthen community links. This cross-border cooperation enables sharing of expertise and resources, leading to a broader impact. The collaboration will improve access to services, encourage inclusion, and help build more connected and supportive communities in the partner municipalities.
