Enhancing tourism through the development of the Bee route from Kuršėnai to Ventspils

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Šiauliai district in Lithuania and Ventspils in Latvia face common challenges in tourism development. Both regions lack open spaces and facilities for eco-tourism, limiting opportunities for visitors and local communities. Financial constraints hinder the expansion of Ventspils Museum’s beekeeping exhibition, while Lithuania’s beekeeping heritage is underrepresented in museums. Despite rich traditions, limited diversification of beekeeping products restricts economic opportunities for local beekeepers.

Project objective

The project focuses on boosting local economies by attracting tourists and supporting local businesses through the creation of bee-related tourism sites and routes. Additionally, it aims to preserve and promote the region's rich beekeeping heritage while advocating for sustainable tourism practices that protect and enhance the natural environment, especially habitats crucial for bees and biodiversity.

Planned activities

The project strategically addresses key challenges in Šiauliai district and Ventspils through a comprehensive approach. It focuses on enhancing tourism by establishing a Bee Park in Šiauliai district and developing a new exhibition at Ventspils Museum. These additions go beyond existing attractions, offering unique experiences that increase visitor engagement and encourage longer stays. A crucial aspect of the project is collaboration with local beekeepers and businesses. By creating a dedicated Bee Route, the initiative fosters innovation and cooperation, encouraging beekeepers to expand their offerings beyond traditional honey. This diversification opens opportunities for specialty honey products, natural cosmetics, and wellness goods, tapping into new markets and increasing economic potential. To support this transformation, the project prioritizes skill development and innovation. Training programs and capacity-building initiatives will equip beekeepers and local entrepreneurs with the knowledge and expertise needed to create high-quality, attractive products for tourists. Community engagement is another key component. Open events and educational activities will not only raise awareness about beekeeping and cultural heritage but also actively involve both locals and visitors. These initiatives foster a deeper appreciation for the region’s natural and cultural assets while strengthening local identity and pride. Finally, an effective promotional strategy will ensure the Bee Route gains visibility. Utilizing social media, websites, and targeted tourism campaigns, the project will attract eco-tourists and cultural explorers, ultimately boosting tourism in Šiauliai district and Ventspils. By promoting sustainable tourism and cross-border cooperation, the project will stimulate economic growth, foster innovation, enrich local communities and attract diverse visitors interested in eco-tourism and cultural heritage.
