Strengthening Firefighting Capacities in Klaipeda and Kurzeme Regions for reducing fires

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Forest fires pose a significant and growing threat to the environment and human health in Latvia and Lithuania. Over recent years, the frequency of forest fires in these countries has increased due to climate change and human activities.

Project objective

The project aims to enhance preparedness and response capabilities for forest fires and related emergencies in the neighbouring Kurzeme region of Latvia and Klaipeda region of Lithuania. By enhancing the readiness and resilience of firefighting teams, the project will allow the regions better to adapt to the climate change and ensure a safer and more sustainable environment.

Planned activities

The project key outputs are acquisition of advanced firefighting equipment, such as respiratory protection equipment vehicle equipped with powerful compressors and unique air quality monitoring technology. The project will also organise joint simulation training on managing a large forest fire in the border area, as well as large-scale practical training focusing on fire suppression techniques and coordination between firefighter of both counties. To improve physical fitness, psychological resilience, and teamwork among firefighters the project will include sports competitions and intensive training camps. The partners will also engage local communities in educational campaigns on fire prevention. The cross-border cooperation is crucial to this project, enabling sharing of knowledge and equipment, and ensuring coordinated approach to managing fires that spread in the border areas. By enhancing joint efforts, the project ensures that firefighters are better prepared to handle large-scale forest fires, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
