Heritage horizons: Švėkšna and Kuldīga then and now

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Švėkšna and Kuldīga face shared challenges in preserving and utilising their rich cultural heritage for tourism and community development. Both towns, with their cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and significant heritage sites, struggle to restore and adapt these assets for modern use. While Kuldīga holds UNESCO World Heritage status, Švėkšna aspires to achieve it, requiring knowledge-sharing and support. Balancing heritage conservation with tourism development is essential to foster cultural appreciation and stimulate local economies.

Project objective

To preserve, restore, open cultural heritage objects to the public and promote cultural cross-border tourism in Švėkšna and Kuldīga towns.

Planned activities

The project aims to create a cross-border touristic route connecting Švėkšna in Lithuania to Kuldīga in Latvia. This route will showcase restored historical sites alongside interactive, modern experiences offering visitors an educational and cultural journey. The project will promote cultural exchange, attract tourists, and boost local economies through new opportunities for employment and tourism-related activities. The project key outputs include the restoration of former synagogue in Švėkšna, preservation of Kuldīga’s medieval cellar, development of gamified exhibitions, and creation of a unified tourism route. Local communities, tourism businesses, and cultural heritage professionals will benefit from increased visitation, economic growth, and enhanced preservation.
