Culinary tourism development through modern taste of traditional Lithuanian and Latvian cuisine

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The cross-border regions of Latgale in Latvia and Siauliai in Lithuania share challenges in developing gastronomic tourism. Despite growing demand for culinary experiences, both countries lack a unified vision of their national cuisines and face an underdeveloped supply of culinary heritage dishes.

Project objective

The overarching goal of the project is to preserve, promote, and revitalize the shared culinary traditions of two neighboring countries transforming them into key tourist attractions. By developing new culinary heritage tourism products and raising awareness, it seeks to boost travel, enhance visitor experiences, and increase the number of tourists in the Programme area, fostering cross-border cultural appreciation.

Planned activities

Four partners will work in this project to implement significant activities of the project which include the establishment of two culinary experience centers in Siauliai and Daugavpils offering education and tasting sessions with authentic regional dishes during and after the project implementation time. Historical culinary studies of Siauliai and Latgale will make the foundation for creating of a historical culinary menu and a “Latvian and Lithuanian Culinary Heritage” e-book, brochures and a gastronomy map. Tailored recommendations for food suppliers, producers and growers will also be developed alongside planned gastronomy festivals in Latgale and Siauliai regions.  Partners will organize experience exchange trips to gain more knowledge which will allow for reaching even better project results. A social media campaign including influencers will further amplify the project's impact. Project results is planned to be present during the final forum. The project will benefit local communities, tourism businesses, and visitors, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of the region’s rich culinary culture. By revitalizing culinary heritage, the project will enhance the visibility and attractiveness of the regions to domestic and international visitors. Moreover, after the project implementation partners will continue work together to maintain and further promote culinary heritage tourism. Partners will sign cooperation agreement to formalize their joint efforts for promotion of culinary heritage tourism and will make efforts and create new plans to create culinary heritage tourism route covering Lithuania and Latvia.
