The “Weekend in Village” project whisked tourism specialists away on a vibrant two-day journey through the Selonia region, revealing its hidden gems and rich cultural tapestry. Their adventure began in Nereta, with a visit to the local history museum and the charming Nereta Lutheran Church, setting the stage for a deep dive into the area’s heritage. Stops at the elegant Vecmēmeles and Ērberģes Manors offered a glimpse into the aristocratic past.
The day continued with a visit to the UNESCO-listed Struve Geodetic Arc point and the mystical Ear of God in Staburags parish. A tranquil boat ride on the Daugava River from Vīgante Park provided a perfect prelude to the breathtaking views from Taborkalns Observation Tower, capping off a day filled with exploration and discovery of Selonia.
Day two began at the “Selonian Farm” branch of the Jēkabpils Museum of History, followed by a tour of the storied Krustpils Castle. The specialists then wandered through Jēkabpils’ Old Town Square before heading to Viesīte to explore the Selonian museum “Sēlija”. A final lunch offered time to savour the region’s charm and reflect on the potential for developing Selonia into a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic rural escape.
Throughout the visit, discussions with local entrepreneurs, SME’s and tourism service providers highlighted exciting opportunities for tourism enterprises, emphasising Selonia’s potential to become a thriving hub for sustainable and culturally immersive travel experiences. Additionally, the visit strengthened cross-border cooperation by fostering new connections and shared insights between Latvian and international tourism experts, paving the way for collaborative projects to enrich the region’s tourism landscape.
