The visit of Jēkabpils and Aizkraukle tourism specialists to Biržai was a dynamic two-day experience, designed to exchange knowledge and explore the rich cultural and natural offerings of the region. The event fostered cross-border cooperation, providing valuable insights into tourism development strategies and strengthening ties between the Latvian and Lithuanian regions.
The journey began at the Biržai Region Museum “Sėla”, where the specialists were introduced to the area’s history and tourism sector opportunities, followed by a visit to the Biržai Regional Park Visitor Centre where unique nature phenomenon – sinkholes in BIržai district was presented, closing with a scenic walk by the lake. Participants also explored “Biržai Teahouse” – a tea shop, accommodation, and gallery of antique teapots, where around 800 teapots from all over the world are displayed. Visited Biržai Tourism and Business Information Centre, where all partners enriched discussions on local and cross-border tourism opportunities.
The visit continued with a delightful stop at Šiaurinė Ranča, where the specialists experienced rural life firsthand. A walking tour of J. Janonis Square and surrounding landmarks showcased the town’s charm, while presentations at the Biržai Cultural Centre provided further insights into regional tourism efforts.
The specialists spent the evening at Sodeliškių Dvaras, where they participated in an educational Selonian bread-baking masterclass, learning about traditional Lithuanian culinary practices. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of the cultural significance of local traditions in Selonia.
On the second day, the group visited the Museum of Antique Machinery, Kirkilai Amusement Park, and the Kirkilai Observation Tower, marveling at the region’s blend of history, adventure and unique nature. The tour concluded with a visit to the longest pedestrian bridge in Lithuania at Lake Širvėna and a guided tour of a local brewery.
This exchange visit not only showcased the vibrant culture and scenic beauty of Biržai but also highlighted opportunities for collaborative tourism development. The event strengthened the partnership between the Jēkabpils, Aizkraukle, and Biržai regions, paving the way for future cross-border initiatives and enriched tourism experiences.
