Underwater geological heritage explorations in Lake Plateliai began in the first week of September

During the first week of September, underwater geological heritage explorations began. At the beginning of September, within the activities of the “Geosites” project, another important initiative was launched – preparation for the search of the most valuable sites of underwater geological heritage. Using modern technology – an underwater drone – it was possible to reach the lakebed at a depth of 11–27 meters and record not only the features of the bottom relief, but also the water temperature . At the deepest point, it was only 6 °C.

During the search, aquatic fauna was also observed – several fish species were recorded, including burbot. Interestingly, during the research, an area was discovered which specialists called the “burbot city.” This place is considered one of the most valuable for future underwater heritage research. Experience shows that the most suitable time for lake research is late autumn and spring, when aquatic plants have not yet overgrown, therefore visibility is much better. Meanwhile, in summer, research is hindered by turbid water and very poor visibility, so it is much more difficult to record the most valuable places.

This first step is only the beginning. The designated area for research will provide an opportunity to gain deeper knowledge of the secrets of underwater geological heritage and to reveal the value of the water bodies of our region.
