Cooperation among fire guard services in order to strengthen disaster risk prevention and management on the border of Latvia and Lithuania

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

The neighbouring Dienvidkurzeme Municipality in Latvia and the Skuodas District Municipality in Lithuania face similar firefighting challenges due to their shared more than 80 km border and the forested and peat bogs terrain of both regions, which increases the risk of fires. Moreover, firefighting capabilities are limited due to poor state of infrastructure such as lack of water access points and of professional equipment.

Project objective

The “CAFIGS” project aims to strengthen fire risk prevention and management as well as to ensure safe environment for the residents in the border regions.

Planned activities

The project partners will create new water access points and reservoir, renovate hydrants and acquire such necessary firefighting equipment as pumps and generators for fire trucks, breathing apparatus and fireproof clothing. The partners will also map water access points, test them with new equipment. The map will be available to all rescue services in Latvia and Lithuania thus enabling their faster response times. Experience exchange events will enhance the capacity of firefighters and improve their daily work. The project involves also public awareness raising activities on fire safety and on firemen work, such as firefighting camp for children and fire safety days with lectures, creative workshops and competitions. Cross-border cooperation is key to this project, enabling partners to coordinated fire risk management, share best practice and exchange experience. The project will improve safety and readiness in critical situations, allowing the regions better to adapt to the climate change and ensure a safer and more sustainable environment.
