Protecting biodiversity from invasive alien species

Common territorial challenge (s) that will be tackled by the project

Both Latvia and Lithuania face similar challenges in managing invasive alien species (IAS), including insufficient data on their distribution, lack of local management plans, limited public and institutional knowledge about IAS prevention and eradication. Project focuses on addressing aggressively spreading species such as Sosnowsky’s hogweed (Heracleum sosnowskyi), Spanish slug (Arion vulgaris), Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera), and Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis).

Project objective

INVAGO project aims to promote climate change adaptation by protecting biodiversity from IAS in Zemgale, Latvia, and Northern Lithuania. This will lead to better coordination and implementation of IAS prevention and eradication measures. What sets this project apart is its focus on creating practical, evidence-based tools and fostering collaboration across borders. Impact will be long-lasting, improving ability of local authorities and communities to combat IAS effectively and sustainably.

Planned activities

Project key outputs include training of 105 institutional specialists, eradicating IAS in pilot territories of 28 ha, developing IAS control plans for seven territories, elaborating methodology on the eradication methods and assessing their cost-efficiency. This will be achieved through specialist training, educative seminars, drone-based IAS monitoring, pilot eradication efforts, organizational planning to control IAS spread effectively. Project involves also activities on public awareness raising on IAS issues. Using a cross-border approach, the project emphasizes collaboration between Latvia and Lithuania.
